My Image of the Environment: Full of Possibilities

Deeply inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, I believe children are curious, determined, and full of potential. I provide spaces where children are honoured and respected, have opportunities to play, explore all possibilities, and cultivate their creativity. I love intentionally designing places for and with children that create a sense of home, belonging and beauty. I explore the power of a responsive environment through lighting, sound, materials, design, colour, and texture. Creating responsive environments like the ones illustrated here requires reflection, practice, and time.

How is your image of the child reflected in your environments for children?

I included one of my favorite quotes that speaks to one's image of the child and the environment.

The environment has so much depth, thought, reflection, values, human connection and relationship that it conveys. I believe that the environment, as well as the materials, speak to the children and relay the values we have as educators. If we value creative thinking, collaboration, play, curiosity, and wonder, the environment should encompass this everywhere! When reflecting, I think my spaces send messages to children to play, think creatively, wonder and be curious.

But then... I thought about the expression of power in these spaces, which made me realize that my furniture is not very flexible. The furniture placement is still very educator-driven, despite being home-like, warm and inviting. Looking through the lens of my guiding compass, I have the word collaborative, and now I am rethinking: does my environment value co-construction? I think having the “fixed” furniture and separated areas of art, blocks, library/ cozy, and home reflect my idea of an environment for children. I want to create a place where children believe and know they are co-constructors of the environment. I am now on a journey of transforming spaces with children, where they have power and a voice in all places that are created!
